Brake Fluid Flush

Automotive Brake Fluid Service in Provo

At Cougar Tire & Auto, we take your safety seriously. That’s why we offer a comprehensive brake fluid flush service to ensure your brakes are performing at their best. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that transmits pressure from your brake pedal to your calipers, which in turn clamp down on the rotors to slow down your vehicle. Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, which can lower its boiling point. This can lead to a spongy feeling in your brake pedal and even brake failure in extreme cases. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend flushing your brake fluid to keep your braking system working at its optimal performance.

A brake fluid flush involves removing the old, contaminated fluid from your brake system and replacing it with fresh, high-quality fluid.

This helps to:

  • Improve braking performance: Fresh fluid ensures your brakes respond promptly and firmly when you press the pedal.
  • Prevent corrosion: Brake fluid helps to protect the components in your brake system from rust.
  • Extend the life of your brakes: Regularly flushing your brake fluid can help to prevent premature wear and tear on your brake pads and rotors.

How often should I get a brake fluid flush?

The recommended interval for a brake fluid flush can vary depending on your vehicle’s make, model, driving habits, and the climate you live in. However, as a general rule of thumb, most manufacturers recommend flushing your brake fluid every four to five years. We recommend having your brake fluid checked every time you come in for an oil change. At Cougar Tire, we’ll check all of the fluids in your vehicle when we do a normal oil change. That way you’ll know your brake fluid is good to go every time you come in for a regular oil change service. If we notice your brake fluid is low or contaminated we will likely recommending performing a brake fluid service at that time.

We are committed to providing you with the highest quality service at competitive prices. Contact Cougar Tire & Auto today to schedule your brake fluid flush appointment!

How we perform a brake fluid flush

To perform a brake fluid replacement our technicians will pull your vehicle into our shop and position it on a lift so we can access both top and bottom of the engine bay.

To get started, our tech will locate the master cylinder reservoir and remove the cap taking special notice of the type of brake fluid listed on the cap. We are careful to make sure we replace brake fluid with manufacturer-specified fluid only.

The next step is to evacuate used fluid with a brake fluid machine which uses a vacuum to suck out the old brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Old fluid is extracted from the master cylinder reservoir and from caliper chambers.

New brake fluid is loaded into a separate container on the machine. Our brake fluid machine pressurizes this new fluid and forces it through the brake system lines.

Throughout the process, our technician monitors the new fluid reservoir and keeps it topped up to prevent air from entering the system. Once all calipers are bled and clean fluid flows, the machine and hoses are disconnected. This is best practice for a professional brake fluid flush.

Our technician checks the brake fluid level one last time and performs a test drive to ensure the brakes feel firm and responsive. We then dispose of the used brake fluid responsibly by partnering with a local recycler.

Brake pad are the component of your brake system that touch the surface of your brake discs or drums, depending on which brake system your vehicle has. Brake pads are composed of tough friction material bound to steel backing plates. Brake pads naturally wear down over time and should be checked often and replaced when the thickness becomes less than the tolerance specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Brakes will “squeal” when your brake pads become worn or glazed over. This is a common and intended feature to let you know it’s time for a brake pad replacement. Depending on whether your brakes are drum brakes or disc brakes, your brakes can accumulate brake dust which can also make the brakes squeak when you apply the brakes. This can usually be fixed by cleaning the brake dust out of the system, applying brake spray which can help quiet the squeak, or if replacing the brake pads and rotors.

Depending on your driving habits and general driving conditions in the area you live, high quality brake pads can typically last for up to 3 to 5 years or longer. Brake rotors can last for up to 70,000 miles or more. Both brake pads and rotor should be inspected at least every time you come in for an oil change.

A brake system flush is when the brake fluid is drained out of the brake system and new fluid is added. Brake system flushes help ensure the proper functioning and longer life span of the brake system.

Each vehicle manufacturer makes recommendations on how and when to change your vehicle’s brake fluid. The timing varies by the type, make and model of the car, the driving conditions you encounter, and other manufacturer recommendations. A good rule of thumb is to have your brake fluid checked every time you come in for an oil change. In general, brake fluid should be changed about every four to five years.
